Haiti, Day One

Today was our first full day in Haiti. What a day!! After a night’s rest (some slept better than others…the gals who were out on the terrace had to put up with a rooster all night), we had a good breakfast and then loaded up to head out to Chambrun. The plan was to take all the medication and supplies that we brought and set then up to be ready to run two clinics on Monday. One clinic we will run out of the building at Nehemiah in Chambrun, the other clinic will be a mobile clinic we will run from the bus. Aaron had a little too much fun driving the bus in Haiti. Some had too much fun riding in the back of a pick-up.
When we arrived in Chambrun, there were people waiting to be seen at the clinic. So we threw a plan together (sort-of) and started seeing patients. A few hours later, 64 people had been seen, diagnosed, medications prescribed and dispersed. This team is quite amazing in how willing everyone is to jump in and just help where needed. The little baby Deanna is holding above was not doing well. We were able to put in IV in her scalp vein and get her some much needed nutrients. We were also able to feed her Mom, who also had not been feeling well and hadn’t eaten in a couple of days. We sent them home and expect to see them at church tomorrow where Deanna can check on them both.
After lunch, we finished putting away meds and putting together the totes for the medical clinic we will run on Monday. Then we went into the town of Chambrun to visit with some of the kids and people there, and then we made the 17 kilometer (45 minutes to 1 hour) trip back to where we are staying. Check out the pictures below from last night and today.
